This new collection brings Kenneth Zammit Tabona's artistic vision into the tactile world of ceramics, merging tradition with creativity in a fresh, expressive way.
A Way of Seeing
“I have always interpreted the world around me,” Kenneth explains. His paintings often reflect the Baroque interiors, lush gardens, and dramatic landscapes of the Mediterranean island of Malta. These same themes, rich in atmosphere and character, now find new form on ceramic surfaces, from plates to decorative pieces.
Known for his spontaneous approach, Kenneth rarely plans a painting in detail. Instead, he allows his work to evolve organically, an instinctive process that translated surprisingly well into ceramic design. “Watercolour adapts beautifully, and the ceramic technique translates my work seamlessly" he says.
Kenneth's journey as an artist has been shaped by a series of serendipitous moments. From early encouragement by Nicholas de Piro, who first published his illustrations, to his time as Artist in Residence at the Melitensia Art Gallery, and a defining collaboration with philosopher Fr Peter Serracino Inglott, Kenneth’s artistic identity has been refined over decades.
Now, another chapter begins with Villa Bologna Pottery - a place he has known all his life and held close to his heart.
“I have a ginormous soft spot for ceramics and porcelain,” Kenneth shares. “So when Sophie approached me to design for Villa Bologna Pottery, it was like a marriage made in heaven.”
The collection includes twenty original designs - each distinct, yet unified by Kenneth’s signature style. Blue and white, a classic and timeless palette, features prominently, reflecting both his personal preference and Villa Bologna’s heritage style.
For Kenneth, the joy of this collaboration lies in seeing his ideas come to life in a new medium. “My art makes me happy and fulfilled,” he says. “And I hope that anyone who chooses a piece from this collection will feel just as happy and fulfilled, whether it’s a watercolour or a plate.”
